Solaris / Linux System Administrator

Responsible for UNIX Administration and management of 23 Solaris, and 9 Linux servers for the Medical College of Wisconsin.

• Recommended a disk storage solution that saved $140,000 over a competitors product.

• Instituted a change control process for the UNIX systems to keep the development systems in sync with the production systems.

• Recycled into use Sun systems discarded by other departments in order to save money and implement new services.

System Support Engineer

Responsible for providing on-site support to customers for both proactive and reactive issues for hardware, operating system, software, applications and networking.

• Maintained excellent RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability) minimizing customer outages through system analysis and recommendations of preventative measures.

• Educated customers on new products and services to better manage and gather useful data on their environments.

• Worked with sales teams to ensure customer’s needs were being met with newly quoted systems.

• Installed new systems following standard methodology, allowing easier troubleshooting to fellow engineers and also leveraging company’s collective knowledge to improve RAS.

• Managed escalations from first-line technical support and served as liaison between customer and backline engineering / product groups to resolve issues quickly.

• Provided customers with customized system patch analysis and recommend changes to maximize RAS and eliminate potential problems.

Operations Analyst 1998 – 2001

Responsible for UNIX Administration and management of 3 Solaris, 8 HP/UX and 12 Linux servers.

• Performed system security procedures including creating central syslog servers, scans and locking down systems.

• Evaluated new hardware and vendor products and recommend purchase as well as designing new environment for database servers.

• Oversaw Junior Administrators, delegated tasks and trained in new areas.

• Took lead role in setting up new Disaster Recovery Office location for 35 people including hardware, software, networking and premises wiring; ensured a smooth transition from Chicago.

• Re-engineered system to pass first-ever successful DR (Disaster Recovery) test. Wrote part of and modified DR plans and methodologies to ensure recoverability.

Night Operations Analyst 1996 – 1998

Responsible for System Backups for Sybase, HP/UX, and Novell to ensure that SEC requirements were met for data recovery.

• Had access to root (administrator account) to reboot systems and handle minor system maintenance during off hours.

• Used COBOL application to enter fund net asset values, fund dividends and money market fund daily interest and posted days trades in shareholder accounting system.

• Conceived and set up enterprise-wide NTP (Network Time Protocol) that utilized GPS (Global Positioning System) radio receiver to ensure clock accuracy in meeting SEC regulation 4 pm trading day cutoff.
